But it was only after she played the role of the captain of the women’s hockey team in Shah Rukh Khan’s new film that Vidya Malvade shot into the limelight. How was the experience of working with King Khan?
“Shah Rukh Khan is a magnificent actor and a good human being. And he really went out of his way to remove our nervousness, and make us feel comfortable on the sets, she gushes enthusiastically.
Though not a keen sportsperson, Vidya has fallen in love with hockey now. Explains she about her newfound love for the game, What hockey needs is team spirit and lots of energy.
I never played sports in my college. We had a really hard training schedule while we were learning to play the game for the film and, after that, I realised that hockey players work so hard, yet get such little recognition.
It is a very tough sport with heavy uniforms and hard-hitting equipment.

So, hats off to our hockey heroes, who continue their work despite lack of support.”
The rigorous training has been a motivating factor for Vidya, who is a fitness-conscious person herself. “Anyway, as I like to keep myself fit, I dance, do yoga, and hit the gym whenever I can,” says she.
Vidya has been a practitioner of dance forms like Kathak, rumba and salsa for the last 16 years.
After the success of her latest film, Vidya is expectedly flooded with offers. And she has even signed a couple of them. “I am doing a movie with Sanjay Gadhvi opposite Sanjay Dutt, and a movie opposite Abhay Deol and Ranvir Shorey.
There are lots of more offers...let’s see,” says she excitedly.
But, is she comfortable running around trees a la Bollywood style? “Well, it’s part of Bollywood movies. I don’t mind doing song-and-dance routines, or any role which is not vulgar and doesn’t show me in bad light. The main thing is I should be comfortable doing it.”
Vidya says she wants to explore different roles and different genres as much as she can. A die-hard Madhuri Dixit fan, Vidya’s dream is to portray the characters the latter essayed. “There are so many dream roles. I just love Madhuri, so I just love to play her characters. I would also like to play Meg Ryan’s role in Harry Met Sally,” she explains.
Very few people are aware that Vidya started her career in Bollywood with Vikram Bhatt’s Inteha, and followed it up with Mashooka. Although both movies sank at the box office without a trace, Vidya didn’t get disheartened.
I was a bit disappointed as the films didn’t do well. But disappointments are a part and parcel of life. So, one has to keep working towards one’s goal and keep dreaming,” she says rather philosophically.
And who does she draw inspiration from? “My mom. She has always been like a normal Indian mother who balances home and work at the same time, and that too very beautifully,” she says, giving due credit to her mom.
